O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still at high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 courtesy of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges but suffered substantial losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots and bottom 2 respectively. The judges were shocked by the results and instructed the crowd to choose contestants similar to Melissa with the strongest singing skills. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performances. Following two stunning performances on the 7th of September 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie made it to the final two competitors, judge Werner said that newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian PM Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
